What is Pope Benedict’s Title after Retirement?
According to the Vatican Information Service,
“Benedict XVI will be “Pontiff emeritus” or “Pope emeritus”… He will keep the name of “His Holiness, Benedict XVI” and will dress in a simple white cassock without the mozzetta (elbow-length cape).”
In addition, Pope Benedict’s “Fisherman’s Ring” will be destroyed and he will no longer wear the red papal shoes. The ring is a symbol of papal authority, which Pope Benedict received upon his election to the papacy in 2005. Destroying the ring will symbolize the reality that as of 8pm on February 28 he will have resigned from his role as pope.
