Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This election season which culminates on Election Day, we face a very important moment as followers of Christ and citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. There are three proposed Constitutional Amendments on the ballot for consideration by the voters. One of these Amendments seeks to enshrine abortion as a Constitutional right in the Commonwealth. Another Amendment seeks to redefine marriage as something other than the union of one man and one woman. These Amendments are not mere “matters of politics” as some may wish to frame them. They are government initiatives that would redefine in our basic law the moral framework of our society. Both Amendments are objectively evil, destructive to the common good, and an affront to our Lord and His Divine plan for creation.
The Lord Jesus Christ calls to be “light” and “salt” to the world (Mt. 5:13-16). This exhortation by our Lord reminds us of our role as His disciples. When we are light to those around us, we dispel the darkness of the world so others may see clearly and choose what is good, right, and true. When we are salt, we help preserve and enhance the blessings of this world so they can be shared by all and help bring others to a closer union with God. Thus, it is imperative that all Catholics vote “no” on both of these harmful, proposed Amendments to our Constitution. We should also not be afraid to discuss these Amendments with friends, neighbors, colleagues, and others in a constructive and loving way in order to persuade them to reject these proposed changes to our Commonwealth’s basic law.
Finally, I renew a respectful plea that all of you pray for the success of our efforts to oppose these Amendments. Prayer is our most powerful weapon against the forces of evil in our world. Our parish will observe a nine-day Novena in the days leading up to the November election. I encourage all of you to participate in this Novena as a way to lift our voices with one accord to our Lord and His Blessed Mother, asking their powerful assistance to defeat these Amendments.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Killian
